Calculating the cost of a kitchen
Tools
How much will your kitchen really cost? Here are a few tips for working out a realistic budget.
1. Start gathering prices
This might sound obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people decide, "We're doing the kitchen for under $15,000" before they've even priced an oven. So start doing your homework on the cost of a kitchen - how much will the rangehood you want cost? And what about the splashback?
2. Think about the services
A kitchen renovation price tag doesn't just include appliances, cabinetry and benchtop. You also need to plan for trades like plumbers, electricians and, unless you plan on installing the kitchen yourself, you'll need to pay for a professional to do that too. So make sure you budget accordingly.
3. Have you included everything?
Think carefully about this one, as things like new taps, new electrical points, door furniture and even a new lighting system can slip your mind when you've got bigger and better things to plan for, like cabinets and ovens.
4. Don't rely on 'specials'
Sure, sales might save you money, and don't discount getting discounts for cash, but when you're in the planning stages, you're best to expect and plan to pay full price for things. That way, when and if you do get a discount for cash on kitchen appliance or fitting prices, or manage to pick up a bargain in a sale, it'll be a bonus.
5. Get written quotes
A sure-fire way to send your kitchen budget sky high? Rely on verbal quotes when you're working out the cost of your kitchen. Wherever possible, make sure you receive written quotes for services and trades like electricians and plumbers - it saves confusion (not to mention your bank balance) further down the track.
6. Have a contingency plan
Even when you have worked out a budget that you think is as realistic as possible, be sure to set a little extra aside for anything that might crop up during construction or installation. That way, when unexpected costs do crop up, you'll be as prepared as possible.
