Before making a final decision about home heating, have a glance at what's around.

1. Passive solar

Passive solar heating works with the design of your home to provide cost-effective heating throughout the day and night.

2. Active solar

Active solar heating systems collect warm air between the roof and the ceiling and pump it through the house via a transfer device.

3. Hydronic heating

Hydronic heating uses water that is heated by gas, wood or electricity and channelled from a boiler into radiators, skirting-board convectors or fan convectors to heat the home.

4. Ducted heating

Ducted or under-floor home heating permeates the whole house and is usually powered by gas. Installation and running costs are generally low.

5. Gas heaters

Gas heaters are an extremely convenient heating option, as the heat is there at the flick of a switch, but they tend to be expensive to purchase and to run.

6. Wood-fired heaters

Modern day wood-fired heaters can generate a great deal of heat. The key to maximising their efficiency is by having ready access to enough cheap firewood to keep costs down.
