Q. How 'tricky' is it to move utilities - like water pipes - to suit a sink that's in a new position?

A. Kitchen plumbing involves more work than simply positioning the sink in the same spot, but it shouldn't put people off creating their ideal layout. It's a good idea to consult a plumber before you set your heart on moving the sink to the other side of the house, just to make sure it's achievable.

Q. What should people look for when they're buying new tapware for the kitchen?

A. Definitely choose a low-flow model, but select one that has a good water rating. And if you are going to choose a mixer tap - which are very popular for kitchens - then just make sure it returns automatically to the cold water option. That way you'll only use hot water intentionally.

Q. If a client wants a gas cooktop, but their house isn't connected to natural gas, is it still possible?

A. Yes - it just involves rigging up some LPG bottles outside the house. Depending on the brand of cooktop you buy, it will also involve converting that for use with LPG rather than natural gas.

Q. What appliances need to be carefully positioned for kitchen plumbing?

A. Your dishwasher is obviously best placed as close to the sink as possible, just to make disposing of the water as easy as possible. And if you are going to opt for the LPG bottles for your cooktop, the closer your stove is to an external wall the better.

Q. What's the biggest mistake you see people making with their plumbing?

A. Having a bash themselves - you wouldn't believe the number of jobs we get called to where we have to fix mistakes the home handyman has made in plumbing in the kitchen, thinking he can do the job himself.

Q. When should people schedule a plumber to arrive during a kitchen renovation?

A. Ideally, a plumber should be organised to arrive just after the new cabinetry has been installed, but the finishing touches - like cupboard doors - haven't yet been done. This means they're in time to hook up the dishwasher and sink.
