Blue's not the only hue for swimming pools. For that all-important wow factor, choosing the right colour is essential.
Forget boring old-fashioned white or pale-blue bathtub looks. The latest pools are dressed in dazzling blues and iridescent hues - even purple and black.
Whether you want something akin to Australia's coastal waters, or a pool that exudes cool sophistication, the most immediate impact any pool has is the colour of the water.
How this colour combines with the pool's surrounding deck, landscaping and overall design within the setting determines the outdoor scene and overall effect.
Done well, your pool won't just be for swimming, but an outdoor centrepiece that provides year-round viewing pleasure.
According to Out from the Blue landscape architect Francis Dickinson, white is a current favourite. White creates a real sense of clarity and coolness in the water.
Crystal and sapphire blues are paired with the streamlined lap pools and geometric shapes currently in vogue, while darker shades like greens and greys create moodier, more natural effects.
While colours like avocado are out there, there's no denying the most popular colours are still blues.
Aquatechnic's Maree Voss says there's now a wider range of blues available in fibreglass pools, including ones with a three-dimensional granite- or quartz-like effect or colour flecks that add an elegant shimmer.
"The best way to choose is to visit a display centre and have a look at samples of all the colours available, including what they will look like under the water," she says. Most pool companies have large samples that can be dipped in the water if there isn't a pool on display in that colour.
Gold Coast R&R Pools Jeff Murphy advises to steer clear of choosing your pool colour from magazine photos.
"Colours are often touched up for print and the exact colour you see is often unachievable," he says. A good tip is to look at other pools with your preferred finish before making a final decision.
Also keep in mind that the depth of the pool and surrounds will affect the colour. For example, a lot of greenery around the pool will give a green look. The quality of the finish may also influence how well the colour lasts and resists fading.
